THE PROBLEM
Learning Erhu Alone Can Feel Frustrating
The Erhu is beautiful. But learning it alone? That can feel frustrating.
Maybe your pitch feels inconsistent.
Maybe your bow sounds clean one day and scratchy the next.
Maybe you are watching random YouTube videos, but still do not know what you should actually practice.
Maybe you have a teacher, but you still feel like something about the method is not clicking.
Or maybe there simply are no Erhu teachers near you.
That is why Erhu Labs exists.
THE SOLUTION
A Place to Learn Erhu Without Guessing

Erhu Labs is a live Erhu learning membership. You get live guided practice, session recordings, a structured weekly rhythm, and a supportive community — all for $97/month (lock in $67/month if you're one of the first 50 members!).
A small change in left-hand shape can shift your pitch.
A tense finger can make your notes unstable.
A slight change in bow angle can turn a clean tone scratchy.
Erhu Labs helps you understand the mechanics behind your playing, so you can stop guessing and start building a more reliable left hand, a cleaner bow, and a confident sound.
The goal is simple:
Close the gap between the sound you want and the sound that actually comes out.

"Having someone much more experienced help you figure it out is just a game changer."
— Eliott Tordo
2. Recordings & Replay Access
Can't make it live or in a different time zone? Every Lab is recorded. Follow along whenever it suits your schedule, rewatch explanations, and revisit exercises as often as you need.
Erhu technique often takes more than one viewing to click — hear the explanation, try it yourself, come back later, and notice something new.
Your membership gives you a growing library of live training sessions you can keep learning from while subscribed.
3. A Supportive Erhu Community
Learning Erhu can feel lonely, especially with no teacher or other players nearby. Erhu Labs connects you with people learning the same instrument and facing the same challenges.
You're not just buying videos — you're joining an environment where you can keep showing up, stay motivated, and feel less alone.
That's what makes the difference between learning alone and actually sticking with it.
"The community here is absolutely amazing, with wonderful, encouraging members."
— Felisha

WHY IT WORKS
Practicing More Doesn't Always Mean Improving More
— but practicing with awareness does.

Practice without awareness doesn't just fail to help — it actively works against you. Every repetition of unclear technique wires the habit in deeper, and the more hours you put in, the harder it becomes to undo.
Erhu Labs is built around practicing with awareness. It combines the three things most students are missing:
Live guided practice
Weekday Labs where you work through specific left-hand, right-hand, and song-study topics in real time — with feedback while it still matters.
Structured rhythm
A consistent weekly schedule, so you always know exactly what to practice and when.
Community accountability
A consistent place to show up, review recordings, and stay connected with others learning the same instrument.
The Result:
No more guessing what to practice. You show up, work through the material, get immediate guidance, and leave with a clear plan for next time.

Learn From Professional Erhu Soloist Jeffrey Pai

20+ yrs playing · 10+ yrs teaching · Professional Performance Diploma · 2025 Gold & Silver Award Winner
Hi, I'm Jeffrey Pai.
I've spent over twenty years studying the Erhu — performing, competing, and teaching students worldwide.
I hold a Professional Stringed-Instrument Performance Diploma for Erhu and have served as first-chair Erhu in the Canada YC Chinese Orchestra. I've performed at cultural events like Vancouver TaiwanFest and reached players worldwide through my online performances and lessons.
In 2025 alone:
-
Gold — Solo Mastery + Outstanding Musicality Award — Stanford Baipu International Music Competition
-
Silver — Dunhuang Cup North American Division
But what students notice most isn't the awards — it's how I teach.
I can hear and see why your sound is doing what it's doing — trace it to the root cause, and explain the fix in a way that finally clicks.
That's the difference between practicing harder and actually improving — and it's exactly what every Lab is built around.
I'm not here to impress you. I'm here to help you get better.
"His ability to expertly diagnose the root-cause issues holding you back, and effortlessly communicate how to adjust your technique, has been absolutely pivotal to my development as a player."
— Andrew M.
WHO IT'S FOR
Erhu Labs Is For You If…
-
You have an Erhu and can make a sound on both strings
-
You're tired of practicing alone without direction
-
You want a consistent weekly schedule that holds you accountable
-
You're ready to make real improvements
-
You have a practice space and at least 15 minutes a day to practice
-
You want to stay motivated with a supportive Erhu community
"As a beginner of one year trying to figure out the fundamentals on my own… today's lesson with Jeffrey was humbling and enlightening to say the least. Tomorrow I start to rebuild with strong technique that will carry me forward."
— ErhuMike
Who It's Not For
Erhu Labs is NOT for you if:
-
You don't have an Erhu yet
-
You can't produce a basic sound on both strings
-
You're not willing to practice between sessions
-
You're looking for private one-on-one lessons
Erhu Labs may not be the right fit if you're looking for private, one-on-one correction in every session. The Labs are live group training — to keep them focused and comfortable, members keep their camera and mic off. EFMC Pro members can volunteer for live coaching on Fridays.
You still participate fully: play along live, take notes, ask questions, review the recordings, and apply each concept to your own practice. If you specifically want individual feedback on your playing, private lessons are a better fit.
What to Do If You're Completely New
If you've never held an Erhu before or don't know how to produce a sound, don't worry — that's what EFMC Pro was designed fo. Start there first, build your foundation, and then join Labs when you're ready for guided practice.

FAQ
Common Questions
I'm a complete beginner. Can I join Erhu Labs?
Yes — if you can hold the bow and produce a sound on both strings. The early Labs start with open strings and the most fundamental bow control exercises, so you'll be in the right place.
If you don't have an Erhu yet or have never held one, start with EFMC Starter first to build your foundation, then join Labs when you're ready.
Do I need to know how to read music?
No. JianPu (numbered notation) is introduced gradually in the Labs as part of the fundamentals..
What if I can't attend live, or I'm in a different time zone?
Every Lab is recorded. You can follow along on your own schedule.
What Erhu and equipment do I need to get started?
You'll need a playable Erhu. A good instrument in the $400-$800 range will serve most students well for years. If you already have a more expensive Erhu, that's fine too — you can absolutely start with it. The most important thing is that your instrument is properly set up and responsive.
For the live Labs, you'll need a laptop, tablet, or phone with internet access. Cameras and mics stay off during Labs, so you don't need any special equipment. Just bring your Erhu and a willingness to practice.
Is the membership recurring? How do I cancel?
Yes, it's a monthly membership. You can cancel anytime.
Are the Labs private lessons?
No — they're live group sessions, with cameras and mics off to keep everyone comfortable.
How long is each Lab?
Sessions vary. Some are short and direct; others go deeper. The aim is to solve one real Erhu problem each session.
What's the difference between Erhu Labs and EFMC Pro?
EFMC Pro is the complete curriculum (the map). Erhu Labs is the weekly guided practice sessions (the terrain). They work together, but you can start with either depending on your level.
Stop Learning Erhu Alone
You don't need to keep guessing what to practice.
You don't need to wonder why your pitch feels unstable.
You don't need to accept that your bow will always sound unpredictable.
And you don't need to learn Erhu completely alone.
Erhu Labs gives you a clear place to show up, practice, and keep improving — with live guidance, a structured rhythm, and a community that's walking the same path.
This is your moment to finally learn the Erhu — and love it.
